The one shadow look is one of the simplest beauty trends out there. When you know how it works. Make-up professional Peter Philips explains how it's done in an interview.

When it comes to make-up, no one can fool Peter Philips. The Belgian is a luminary in his field and is currently the creative and image director of Christian Dior Make-up. At the current Dior runway show for autumn / winter 21/22 he showed the currently simplest (and hottest) beauty trend ever – the one shadow look. In the interview, he told us how easy it is to put make-up on him.

One shadow look: this is how the beauty trend succeeds

For the make-up look of the ready-to-wear collection, Peter Philips put on an intense smokey eye. The special thing about it: He only used one color. And this is exactly what the one-shadow look is all about. You only use one eyeshadow, regardless of whether it is matt, shimmering or with glitter. The only important thing is the order and the intensity.

The beauty professional used a matte, black eyeshadow for the show look, but the eye make-up also works with all other colors.

I used the sponge applicator. I take something and place the applicator at the outer corner of the eye and press it on the lid to place the color. Then I pick up paint again and place it in the inner corner of the eye. With a soft brush I hide the whole thing in the crease of the eyelid, inside and out. I also blend some eyeshadow under the eye and combine the colors.

The special thing about the look: Peter Philips created a smokey eye with just one color, but the movable lid in the middle remains free, similar to a halo eye. This makes the look less dramatic. "If you make everything black, the whole thing looks very flat and dark. By using the skin color as a highlight, it gives the look more depth," explains Philips.

Blending & fading

So the perfect one-shadow look is mostly about blending and creating smooth transitions. Another possibility, according to Peter, is to keep the color as intense as possible close to the lash line and to make it lighter outwards and upwards. This is especially true for stronger colors. If you want to create a one-shadow look with a shimmer eyeshadow, you can easily apply the tone over the entire eyelid. But here, too, the following applies: Outwardly, the tone must be lighter and softer. This is how the result is really coherent.

By the way, to place the eyeshadow you can use the small sponge applicators that are included in most eyeshadow palettes. But they are not suitable for veneering. According to Philips, you should always (!) Use a brush for this.

A little hint: When you apply your primer to the face, simply apply the remains of your fingers to the eyelids. That's how professional Peter Philips does it. "But not too much," he advises. This prepares the eyes again excellently for the following products – without you needing an additional primer. You can then use a very thin layer of concealer to even out (if necessary).
