Because of animal welfare – helicopter flights in the national park on the test bench

Hut operators in the Hohe Tauern wanted to fix the heli supply for seven years. Not possible, says the court. Reason: animal welfare.

First of all: The helicopter will continue to rotate over the Hohe Tauern and supply huts with food. It is not possible otherwise due to the terrain. For the heli flights, however, the blessing of the authorities is required. Now some of those affected wanted to have the supply from the air fixed for a period of seven years – in the form of an exceptional permit. The authority allowed this, the state administrative court confirmed. But state environmental attorney Gishild Schaufler took legal action against it and was right in the last instance by the Administrative Court: “This is about species protection and an area that is particularly protected.” Viewing helicopter flights “critically”, emphasizes Schaufler: “Disruptions can have a major impact on the breeding behavior of bearded vultures, for example.” In fact, helicopter flights cannot be approved for such a long period of time because harmful effects cannot be ruled out, argues the supreme court and overturns the exemption. Consequence: Heli-flights will probably have to be reapplied for every year in advance.
