‘Emergency hysterectomy’ at FIFA World Cup coach

The women of Chelsea FC have to do without their coach for the time being. Emma Hayes had to have her uterus removed in an emergency operation. As a result of her endometriosis, the 45-year-old is fighting for public awareness of the disease.

FIFA World Coach Emma Hayes has been forced to take a break from football. The Chelsea women’s team coach had to undergo an emergency hysterectomy. The 45-year-old confirmed this in a statement from her club.

“On Tuesday I underwent an emergency hysterectomy following my ongoing battle with endometriosis. I am now in recovery and will need time and patience to make a full recovery,” Hayes said. The successful trainer has been campaigning for greater public awareness of endometriosis for a long time. Those affected have different symptoms and sometimes excruciating pain. The disease can also lead to infertility.

In her absence, Hayes will be represented by her assistant, Denise Reddy. “We also know that the team is very special and we have no doubt that they will do everything to maintain their high level,” she wrote to her team. With Ann-Katrin Berger, a German national goalkeeper plays in Hayes’ team. The 31-year-old can understand what it’s like to have to take a break. Four years after the successful EM, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer again and had to undergo another treatment. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer in 2017 and was back on the pitch in early 2018.

The second German international at Chelsea, Melanie Leupolz, is also not available to the team at the moment. She announced the birth of her first child on Tuesday.

Hayes also had a message for the club’s supporters: “To our fans, you’ve had to listen to me yelling from across the field every week, but now I want to hear you even louder because I’m going to get to mine Sitting at home and watching the team on TV.”

Hayes has been Chelsea manager since 2012. Together with her, the club won five titles in the Women’s Super League – most recently three in a row – and four FA Cups. She is one of the most influential figures in women’s football and was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in early 2022 for her services to the sport.
