G20 summit: Putin and Xi only there virtually

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping will not be personally present at the upcoming G20 summit in Rome. The Russian President and the Chinese Head of State will probably not have to do without the meeting entirely. Official confirmation from Beijing and Moscow is still pending.

At the G20 summit in Rome this weekend, Italy is assuming that Russian President Vladimir Putin and China’s head of state Xi Jinping will take part in the most important discussions via video. According to reports, the agenda of the top meeting of the 20 most important industrial nations was even changed for this.

Putin and Xi are foregoing the trip to Italy, among other things because of the quarantine circumstances in the corona pandemic. There were no confirmations of the heads of state’s plans from Beijing and Moscow on Tuesday.

After preparatory and partly bilateral talks on Friday, the summit officially begins on Saturday morning with the arrival of the heads of state and government. In the evening there is a cultural event in Diocletian’s thermal baths.

A group photo is planned for Sunday in the historic center of Rome. This is followed by further discussion rounds on the summit area. In the afternoon, the summit should end around 4 p.m. with press conferences for the participants.
