Because of the gas price brake: millions of people get money from landlords in December

If you have a direct contract with a gas supplier, you can be happy, so father state takes over a discount. You can also determine exactly how high the one-off payment will be in your case. The exact amount that you paid as a down payment in September 2022 will be reimbursed.

However, the situation is different for apartment buildings that are centrally heated: Here there are usually no direct utility contracts, instead the landlord or manager is an intermediary. In these cases, the supplier only knows the consumption of the entire building.

In these cases, the one-time payment should be credited to the tenants’ operating costs account in December 2022. Nothing changes in the distribution key, the gas costs are to be distributed to the apartments as usual.

In concrete terms, this means that the state will also take over the heating cost deductions for tenants in December. So instead of passing on costs to tenants, as is done in many cases, this time there is money credited by the landlord.

It is questionable, however, whether the landlords can do this quickly and whether a refund is actually possible in a timely manner. It can also be that the one-off payment in December only arrives at the tenant later via the utility bill.
