Biden is considering partial boycott of the Winter Games

Republican hardliners are demanding a complete boycott of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing from Biden because China is suppressing minorities. The US president is now considering certain measures. US athletes should still be allowed to participate.

In protest against human rights violations in China, US President Joe Biden is considering a diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. “That’s something we’re considering,” Biden told White House journalists. What is meant by this is that Washington will not send government officials to the games next February, but US athletes will still be allowed to participate.

Several hardliners of the Republic are calling on Biden to fully boycott the Winter Olympics to protest the repression of the Uyghur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang region. Other Republican MPs and numerous Democrats, on the other hand, are calling for a diplomatic boycott. They include the Chairwoman of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that the White House would shortly announce a diplomatic boycott. Biden and China’s leader Xi Jinping held their much-anticipated video summit on Monday. During the virtual meeting, which lasted several hours, issues such as the conflict over Taiwan and the human rights situation in China were on the agenda. White House officials said a possible diplomatic boycott had not been discussed.
