Mexico’s boxing star threatens to beat Messi

A lot of anger about a small scene from the World Cup dressing room: because football superstar Messi apparently steps on a jersey lying on the floor, boxer Canelo Alvarez freaks out. One thing is clear to him: the Argentinian tramples on Mexican honor.

Strong threat in the direction of Argentina’s soccer icon Lionel Messi from Mexico’s boxing star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. He was reacting to a video from the Argentine dressing room after their 2-0 first-round win over Mexico last Saturday, when the South Americans appeared to be trampling on a Mexican shirt that was lying on the ground.

“Did you see how Messi cleaned the dressing room with our jersey and our flag?” wrote Alvarez, boxing world champion in various weight classes, on Twitter: “He should thank the good Lord that I can’t find him.” The controversial video from the Argentina dressing room shows Messi apparently kicking his feet with the Mexico jersey while his team-mates dance and celebrate the win.

Alvarez’s attacks went viral and also provoked opposition. The six-time world footballer was defended that it was nothing unusual for jerseys to be lying around on the floor after the game. Messi had swapped his dress with Mexico’s veteran Andres Guardado (formerly Bayer Leverkusen). However, Alvarez stuck to his account that the 2014 runner-up insulted Mexico in two respects.

“You obviously know nothing about football”

Former Argentinian world-class striker Sergio “Kun” Aguero defended Messi on Twitter: “Mr. Canelo, don’t look for excuses and problems, you obviously know nothing about football and what happens in a dressing room after the game.” The jerseys are always lying on the floor because they are soaked with sweat.

Alvarez, however, did not rest: “Just as I respect Argentina, Mexico must also be respected. I’m not talking about the country of Argentina, only about Messi and the stupid things he did.” The Paris St. Germain star scored the two-time world champions’ redeeming 1-0 win over Mexico and was subsequently named player of the match.

Alvarez is a world heavyweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight boxing champion. He only lost twice in his career, once against US great Floyd Mayweather.
