During his first meeting with Twitter employees, Elon Musk revealed what could be his future project for Twitter: making it the Western WeChat.
WeChat, does that mean anything to you? If you continue to use Twitter, however, you might get used to some of its features. During a first one-hour interview with Twitter teams, Elon Musk revealed what seems to be the guideline of his project for the platform he is about to own. The businessman said he wanted to make Twitter the Western WeChat. In other words, a do-it-all, versatile app that’s significantly more diverse than the service is today.

With a billion users in China, the application is considered a “Super App” which combines instant messaging, social network and mobile payment platform.
An all-in-one formula that seems within reach of Twitter. It remains to be seen whether this new vision for the service would also replicate the flaws of WeChat, regularly singled out for its questionable privacy policy and censorship. Flaws partly attributable to the authoritarian Chinese regime, but which are far from unknown to American social platforms.
Anyway, Elon Musk’s project is ambitious, very ambitious, as Jasmine Enberg, analyst for Insider Intelligence, points out. “Turning Twitter into a WeChat-like super app would be a massive undertaking for Musk“, she explained to the Associated Press. “Changing consumer behavior is difficult, something Meta quickly discovered during its own super app ambitions.“.
