Before being a Pokémon-like RPG, DokeV was an MMO

In August, during Gamescom 2021, Pearl Abyss unveiled its next promising title: DokeV. In fact, a first trailer had already been released two years ago and the studio did not have the same ambitions for its “pokemon-like” at all. With our interview with the developers and the recent images of the game, we can see that DokeV has, in the end, nothing to do with a Pokémon. Certainly you will need capture some monsters during your adventure (and again, it’s more about bonding with creatures), but the resemblance ends there.

What if DokeV had been an MMORPG?

In one very colorful open world And with stunning graphics let’s face it, DokeV was kind of a revelation for many at Gamescom. Presented as a welcoming co-op RPG, DokeV lets you go on an adventure and collect creatures that can then lend you their powers. You can fish, explore the vast landscapes inspired by South Korea or equip yourself with gadgets such as walkie-talkies, a skateboard or an umbrella to hover.

Short, the possibilities seem endless and the fights ultra dynamic. Certain multiplayer scenes against Bosses make us think of typical MMO features. And for good reason: before becoming a rather solo RPG (or in co-op), the developers thought of making DokeV a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Palying Game.

Why such a change of direction?

In our interview, Sangyoung Kim confirmed that DokeV was actually slated to look like Pearl Abyss’ previous title: Black Desert Online. With the studio’s know-how, it made sense to move into MMORPGs but the vision changed during development.

Thus, the choice to make DokeV an action-adventure game corresponded much better to the vision that the developers had of the title. But as explained above, that does not mean that DokeV will not have a multiplayer aspect, on the contrary.

Tonight, the official Avalanche Software account, behind the highly anticipated Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy, posted a message on Twitter to give updates on the RPG.
