Before the America Summit: Jill Biden in Ecuador

From June 6th to 10th the USA will host the 9th America Summit in Los Angeles. However, due to speculation that the heads of state of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua will not be invited, there is resentment and some nations do not want to take part.

Ahead of the America Summit in two and a half weeks, the US First Lady has called for unity among the region’s democracies in Ecuador. “We are connected, especially on the American continent. When a nation is hit by authoritarianism, a health crisis or poverty, it doesn’t take long for the same problems to reach us all,” Biden said Thursday (local time) during a speech at the Presidential Palace in Quito. “But when nations here in South America embrace democracy, they are living proof that governments can do good for the people they represent, and they inspire others to follow their example.”

From June 6th to 10th the USA will host the 9th America Summit in Los Angeles. However, speculation that the heads of state of the left-wing authoritarian governments of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua will not be invited has sparked resentment. For example, the Mexican head of state, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has announced that he will not attend the meeting unless all countries in the region are invited. The participation of right-wing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was initially unclear – albeit for different reasons.

If the heads of state of the most important Latin American countries do not come to the meeting, observers believe that the summit could be a defeat for President Joe Biden.

“For the summit, our leaders have set themselves an ambitious agenda to collectively build a just and sustainable future, strengthen health and pandemic resilience, and improve democratic governance,” said Jill Biden in Quito. After her visit to Ecuador, the First Lady plans to visit Panama and Costa Rica.
