Behemoth: freezing and immersive gameplay for Skydance’s VR game

Peaks loom on the horizon. The wind whistles in your ears, muffling the sound of your footsteps on the snow. That’s when you feel it: a tremor beneath your feet. A rhythm. A growl. The vibrations travel up your legs to get lost in the sword you hold in your hands.

At Skydance Games, we set a new standard for visceral, gritty combat with our previous title, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. For our next game, our team wanted to tackle new challenges. We believed that a large-scale experience could only be had in VR. How far could we push this idea?

We designed this dark fantasy universe to stretch the limits of what was possible in a headset, creating a gloomy new world, teeming with mysteries and dangers of all sizes. When you enter the Forsaken Lands, one thing is certain: you are not welcome here. Everything and everyone wants to kill you. Will you have enough courage to move forward?

Our team is proud to present Skydance’s Behemoth, which will be released in Fall 2024.

The Wastelands are epic. The remains of a once-thriving civilization emerge from the chaotic terrain. The prodigious mountains in the distance extend their shadow over the surrounding landscapes. Monumental towers mark your path as you snoop in search of the lair of a behemoth.

The Wastelands are your challenge and your hunting ground. Using a grappling hook and supernatural grip strength, you’ll climb, slide, and grapple your way up or down walls, towers, and cliffs. Overcome the obstacles that stand in your way, explore every nook and cranny to unearth unreachable items, or pounce on your unsuspecting opponents and send them into the abyss.

But don’t get too big-headed. One step in the wrong direction, and bad luck will befall you. If you taunt the Wastelands too much, they’ll get back at you.

Although it appears empty at first glance, the Wastelands are populated by marauders and fanatics. To them, you are just an external threat, an adversary to be executed. You can’t reason with them, so you’ll have to carve your way to victory by any means necessary.

Skydance’s Behemoth brings some variations to our iconic, physics-based close combat system.

Your enemies are not brainless zombies, they are talented warriors and fine strategists. Don’t let your guard down. Equip yourself with all the weapons you can find. Block, parry, slash and slash to wear down their resistance. You can then smash skulls, plunge your blade into their hearts, cut off limbs and eviscerate everything you come across.

These tortured citizens have succumbed to the ancient curse that destroyed their fallen kingdom and was the source of the violence that plagues the Wasteland.

It is this same curse that grants you bursts of supernatural strength that can turn the tide of a battle. For what ? It remains a mystery to you, for the moment. But it is an advantage that will be invaluable to you against these adversaries who dominate the landscape from all their height…

You have traveled to the Wasteland to end this terrible curse before its devastation reaches other realms. Behemoths are evil incarnate, their size and strength matched only by their fury. The only way to stop the curse is to eradicate them.

Many others have hunted down these behemoths before you. They all died there. When you fight these titanic monsters, you put the skills you’ve honed to the test across miles of rugged terrain, shedding lots (really lots) of blood. Face your biggest fears, push your body’s limits, and you might end up triumphing over the impossible. Only then will the deepest secrets of the Wasteland be revealed…
