  • Protests broke out at the Apple supplier Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou on Wednesday.
  • Videos on the online services Weibo and Twitter show hundreds of workers taking to the streets.
  • The workers told the BBC they have not received promised wages.
  • Foxconn recently had a sharp increase in corona infections in its factory, which is why the plant was sealed off.

Apparently, people in hazmat suits and riot police stood in the way of some demonstrators. A snippet of live video showed dozens of workers standing in front of a police line and a police vehicle with blue lights flashing at night, shouting, “Defend our rights! Defend our rights!” The authenticity of the videos has not yet been independently verified.

In one video, a worker is dragging a metal barrier across the ground, and in the background a voice yells, “They’re rushing in! smoke bombs! tear gas!”

The keyword “Foxconn riots” was blocked on the Chinese online service Weibo. However, some texts relating to the protests at the Foxconn factory could still be called up.

Foxconn recently noticed a sharp increase in corona infections in its factory in Zhengzhou, which is why the Taiwanese company sealed off the plant. At the end of October, a number of workers fled the site on foot. Some of the workers complained about the miserable conditions in the factory, where hundreds of thousands of people work.

Legend:

Foxconn employees currently have to be tested regularly.
