(Reuters) – Belarus protested to Ukraine on Thursday after it said it shot down a Ukrainian S-300 rocket in a field in the Brest border region, during a massive wave of Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian territory.

Brest region military commissar Oleg Konovalov downplayed the significance of the incident in a video posted to social media by the official BelTA news agency, saying residents “had absolutely no reason to s ‘worry”. “Unfortunately, these are things that happen,” he said.

Oleg Konovalov likened the incident to the fall of an S-300 missile, presumably fired by Ukrainian forces as they targeted a Russian missile, in November in eastern Poland.

The Ukrainian ambassador in Minsk was nevertheless summoned to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, which described the incident as extremely serious and called for a thorough investigation by the Ukrainian authorities.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the incident was due to the pushback of a “barbaric” missile attack by the Russians against civilian targets.

The Russian army carried out massive strikes on Thursday morning on Kyiv, the capital where three people were injured, and several cities in Ukraine, report the Ukrainian authorities.
