Diogenes Verlag published the following press release today: “At eight o’clock in the morning yesterday, Thursday, November 9th, 2023, eight armed men stormed my parents’ apartment. They threw my mother and father to the ground. They immediately handcuffed the father. They then searched the apartment. They confiscated all phones and computers. They took my father without saying where, and they said to mom: Thank your son.”

The 39-year-old Filipenko is one of the harshest critics of dictator Alexander Lukashenko. Like then-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, he accused the regime of rigging the 2020 elections.

After a scholarship in Switzerland in 2021, Filipenko did not return to Belarus. He faces imprisonment there.
