Belgium and Engie agree on an extension of nuclear reactors

BRUSSELS, June 29 (Reuters) – Belgium has reached an agreement with French energy company Engie to extend the life of the country’s nuclear reactors by ten years.

Belgium had originally planned to phase out nuclear power in 2025 but Ukraine’s invasion of Russia prompted the Belgian coalition government to revise its plans to be less dependent on natural gas.

The life of the two most recent Belgian reactors, Doel 4 and Tihange 3, will thus be extended, according to the agreement concluded with Engie which must be implemented at the end of July. (Report Marine Strauss, Blandine Hénault for the French version, edited by Kate Entringer)
