Belle and Sebastian 3, the last chapter: how many dogs have played the role of Belle on screen?

After Nicolas Vanier and Christian Duguay, it was Clovis Cornillac who took over behind the camera for this 3rd film. The actor had already rubbed shoulders with the realization with the romantic comedy A little, a lot, blindly, as well as some episodes of season 2 of Chiefs.

The actor was not familiar with the universe of Belle and Sebastian but was convinced by the producer Clément Miserez, and by the script”adventurous and daring“. In addition to the staging, Clovis Cornillac also embodies the main antagonist of the feature film. A double hat which the actor easily accommodated. “It was quite convenient because I didn’t have to explain to another actor that he didn’t have to buy the character! We save a lot of time. As I work a lot upstream, the hold on me lasts 10 minutes. In short, we do in an hour what we can do in half a day elsewhere“he explained during the promotion of Belle and Sebastian 3: the last chapter.

For the record, no less than 4 dogs were needed during filming to embody the character of Belle on screen. The first 3, named Garfield, Fort and Fripon, have been present since the first film in the saga. The last, called Isabeau, was used only for this final feature film, to facilitate filming with the puppies. For his part, the trainer Andrew Simpson worked with the puppies during the 8 weeks preceding the shooting, to train them. The most difficult thing for the production was to find enough puppies, because their growth was very fast.

“We therefore had to replace the puppies very regularly with smaller ones because they grow very quickly. Suffice to say that we had to plan several litters before the shooting. It was also necessary to take into account the color of each of the puppies which were all very different. It was fun work but it was difficult especially when it’s about coordinating with breeders or finding all the puppies we needed“, he explained.
