“Ben Affleck has totally transformed in The Tender Bar”: Tye Sheridan amazed by his partner on Prime Video

On the poster for The Tender Bar by George Clooney, Tye Sheridan returned to AlloCiné on his experience in this drama inspired by the memories of the writer JR Moehringer, which he plays alongside Ben Affleck.

Based on the eponymous successful memoir by JR Moehringer, The Tender Bar tells the story of this writer’s youth. Boy without a father, he spends hours in the bar run by his uncle Charlie, an eccentric, crazy and colorful man who represents the only father figure in his entourage.

Despite life’s hardships, JR decides to pursue his personal and professional dreams with courage and awkwardness, while always keeping one foot in his uncle Charlie’s bar. Alongside Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan plays this successful writer under the watchful eye of Georgle Clooney, who directs the film.

AlloCiné: Working with George Clooney as a director must have been quite an experience?

Tye Sheridan: Absolutely, it was a unique moment and I learned a lot from George because he is very generous. Since he is an actor and director, he can put himself in my shoes and advise me better. It’s not just the director’s point of view that speaks to you, but also that of the actor. I almost felt like I was acting the scenes with him when we were shooting.

How did you come to be JR Moehringer?

Unfortunately, to this day, I still haven’t met JR Moehringer, the writer who inspired this film. It is a great pity, moreover. However, it is a story that touches me personally and I can easily identify with its journey. So I had to find the bridge between JR’s life and mine.

I too come from a small town. In my case, it’s a city in Texas where no one would think for a second of becoming an actor or a director. So I had to impose my vision of what I wanted to do with my life. It’s a bit the same for JR who had to impose himself as a writer against all the negative opinions he faced.

How was your collaboration with another sacred Hollywood actor, namely Ben Affleck?

It was magical to work with Ben who, I believe, has completely transformed with this singular character of Charlie, the uncle of JR. He has boundless energy and that set the pace for the scenes we shared.

What message do you take from the film?

For me there is a major theme in The Tender Bar: that of lack. Sometimes we focus too much on what seems to be missing in life. And at some point, we realize that what we think we miss has finally always been there, close to us.

Sometimes we can’t see what’s in front of our eyes, and that’s how we can miss our life. You really have to keep your eyes open and know how to seize the moment, the right opportunity to get to have the life you really want, deep down.
