“Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch will appear in a Netflix thriller series. “The 39 Steps” is based on a classic novel.
The streaming service Netflix has secured the miniseries “The 39 Steps”. “Doctor Strange” and “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch (44) will play the leading role as reported by “The Hollywood Reporter”, among others.
The thriller series is based on the spy novel “The Thirty-Nine Steps” by the Scottish writer John Buchan (1875-1940) from 1915. Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) wrote “The 39 Stages “(1935) already filmed the book. In the Netflix series, the novel is brought into modern times. Cumberbatch plays Richard Hannay, an ordinary man who gets caught up in a great conspiracy to bring about a new world order. The actor will also be on the executive producer team. Edward Berger (51, “Patrick Melrose”) will direct, with Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”) named as the writer.
