Berlin SPD and Greens on par: survey sees CDU man Wegner ahead of Giffey

Berlin SPD and Greens on par
Survey sees CDU man Wegner ahead of Giffey

Two weeks before the repeat elections in Berlin, CDU top candidate Wegner has overtaken Governing Mayor Giffey in favor of the voters. The SPD’s top candidate is also threatened by the Greens. In the battle for the Red City Hall, the coalition partners are neck and neck.

If Berliners could elect the head of government directly, the most powerful man in the country would be Kai Wegner from the CDU. This emerges from a survey by the opinion research institute Civey for “Tagesspiegel” and “Spiegel”. According to this, 25 percent of those eligible to vote would currently choose Wegner as governing mayor.

The CDU state and parliamentary group leader thus replaces the social democrat Franziska Giffey as the leader in the electoral favour. Around two weeks before the repeat election, the Governing Mayor received 21 percent approval. Greens top candidate Bettina Jarasch is in third place with 19 percent. Before the election on September 26, 2021, Giffey had clearly led this ranking, sometimes with almost 40 percent approval. 33 percent of Berliners would not vote for any of the three top candidates mentioned in the current survey. Two percent don’t know yet.

Things are also going well for Wegner’s party: a good two weeks before the repeat election, the CDU is still ahead of the SPD and the Greens. The Christian Democrats are therefore at 23 percent. They are four percentage points ahead of the SPD and the Greens, who each have 19 percent. Compared to the poll two weeks ago, the gap between the parties is unchanged. The three leading parties have all improved by one percentage point.

FDP would probably be represented

Among the smaller parties, the Left has 12 percent, the AfD 11. The FDP would probably still be represented in the House of Representatives with 7 percent. 9 percent would vote for a party not represented in the House of Representatives. The representative survey was conducted between January 19th and 26th. 2001 people took part. The statistical error is a maximum of 3.8 percentage points.

According to the survey, the previous red-green-red coalition could continue to govern. The SPD, the Greens and the Left would all have a majority in Parliament. If the Greens are ahead of the SPD on the evening of the election, the Greens’ top candidate Bettina Jarasch could also lay claim to the Red Town Hall. In the Berlin trend of the broadcaster RBB a week ago, the Greens were three percentage points ahead of the SPD in second place behind the CDU.
