BERLIN (Reuters) – The German government will propose on Monday that the outgoing German president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, be reappointed for a new term, we learned on Friday from government sources.
Coming from the European People’s Party (EPP), Ursula von der Leyen saw her position strengthened in the European Parliament with the progress of her conservative camp in the elections held from June 6 to 9, but she will have to obtain the agreement of a majority of European leaders and find a majority in Strasbourg.
European leaders meet in Brussels on Monday for their first meeting since the June vote. They should informally agree on a distribution of key positions.
With 13 European leaders from political groups belonging to the EPP as well as with the voice of France, which could also support the reappointment of Ursula von der Leyen, and that of Germany, it should reach the qualified majority set at 15 out of 27 countries representing at least 65% of the bloc’s population.
