A touch of normality blows through Germany: The Berlinale Summer Special was ceremoniously opened on Wednesday evening.

Finally the festival atmosphere in Germany again: the Summer Special of the 71st Berlin International Film Festival opened with a festive gala in Berlin on Wednesday evening. It is the first major cultural event in Germany since the outbreak of the corona pandemic in the spring of last year. For the start of the Berlinale, an open-air cinema was set up on Museum Island especially for 450 guests.

Among the guests were the actresses Iris Berben (70) and Natalia Wörner (53), colleague Ulrich Matthes (62), the actress and director Maria Schrader (55). From politics, for example, Minister Julia Klöckner (48, CDU) and Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth (66, Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) as well as the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller (56, SPD) took part. “We want to be inspired by the summer mood in Berlin,” said Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian (49) in his speech according to rbb.

After the opening ceremony with numerous speeches by those responsible, the gala contribution “The Mauritanian” by Kevin Macdonald (53) was shown. Film enthusiasts can marvel at a total of 126 films in 16 open-air cinemas until June 20. This year, the heart of the festival is not Potsdamer Platz, but the newly designed open-air cinema on Museum Island. On June 13th the Silver and the Golden Bear will be awarded.
