The selection for the 73rd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival has just been unveiled. X feature films are in the running for the Golden Bear and the Silver Bear.
Who will succeed Alcarras by Carla Simon, who was awarded the Golden Bear last year? The selections for the official competition and Encounters of the 73rd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival have just been unveiled.
Chaired by Kristen Stewart, the official competition jury will be responsible for deciding between 18 feature films, 6 of which are directed by female directors.
Note that 6 of the 18 feature films in the official competition are French co-productions: Le Grand Chariot by Philippe Garrel, Disco Boy by Giacomo Abbruzzese, Bad Living by João Canijo, Music by Angela Schanelec, Sur l’Adamant by Nicolas Philibert and Totem by Lila Aviles.
We should also note the presence in competition of Suzume by Makoto Shinkai (scheduled in theaters on April 12) to whom we already owe the excellent Your Name and Les Enfants du temps. Upon its release in 2016, Your Name was a resounding success in Japan, with a total of 19.4 million admissions at the box office, the third best result of all time at the Japanese box office for a local production. .
This edition will take place from February 16 to 26 with many highlights and the opening screening (out of competition) of She Came to Me by Rebecca Miller.
Steven Spielberg, whose next film The Fablemans hits theaters February 22, will be presented with an Honorary Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
Sean Penn and Aaron Kaufman’s documentary Superpower, which looks back on the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, will be presented in preview.
