“The Passport Forger” is among the first seven films to be shown in the “Berlinale Special” and “Berlinale Special Gala” sections.

The first seven films that will be shown as part of the “Berlinale Special” and the “Berlinale Special Gala” at the Berlin International Film Festival (February 10-20, 2022) are officially announced been.

“The pandemic has created distance – not only between people, but also in the way we see the world,” says the Artistic Director of the Berlinale, Carlo Chatrian. “The 2022 program includes films made during the pandemic that reflect what it feels like to be apart from others,” he continues. “With this first selection, we want to highlight the power of cinema as a connecting element between distant people, places and times,” explains Chatrian.

These feature films are celebrating their world premieres

“Der Passfälscher” (Germany / Luxembourg) by Maggie Peren (47, “This stupid heart”) with Louis Hofmann (24), Jonathan Berlin (born 1994), Luna Wedler (22) and Nina Gummich (30) in leading roles is located in Berlin from 1942. Based on the autobiographical report of the same name by Cioma Schönhaus (1922-2015), the story of a survivor is shown who opposed the Nazi era with unshakable optimism, compassion and humanity.

“Against the Ice” (Iceland / USA / Denmark) among others with “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (51) plays in Greenland’s ice cream and celebrates its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next year, as does “À propos de Joan “(France / Germany / Ireland) with Isabelle Huppert (68) and Lars Eidinger (45). The film “Gangubai Kathiawadi” (India), which tells of sex workers fighting for their rights in a small Indian town, was also selected for the program.

The US documentary “Nothing Lasts Forever” is also celebrating its world premiere in Berlin. The same applies to “1341 Framim Mehamatzlema Shel Micha Bar-Am” (“1341 Images of War and Love”), a co-production by Israel, the United Kingdom and the USA. And the French documentary “Le chêne” (“The Oak – My Home”) will be shown internationally for the first time.

The “Berlinale Specials” section emerged from the special screenings that were part of the competition from 1984 onwards. Since 2004 it has offered a rich and dazzling range of films and events, which are also shown at unusual venues such as the Brandenburg Gate.
