Bernard Cazeneuve, about the popular primary: “I cannot join a device that tests candidates who have not declared themselves”

Former Socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was the guest of Jean-Pierre Elkabbach during the program Repères this Sunday, on CNEWS. He returned to the popular primary on the left, which he did not wish to support.

“I cannot adhere to a device which tests candidates who have not declared themselves and who have even declared their opposition to the organization of this primary”, he declared.

Indeed, among the seven candidates competing in the primary, three have announced their refusal to participate: Yannick Jadot, Anne Hidalgo and Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Among the main candidates, only Christiane Taubira, favorite, agreed to participate and to submit to the rule of the election, namely to line up behind the winner in the event of defeat.

If Bernard Cazeneuve considered that the desire for a gathering of the left, desired in particular by a young electorate, was commendable, he nevertheless considered that “these are processes which are very far from the idea [qu’il se fait] of democracy and politics.

Struggling in the polls, with several scattered candidates failing to unite more than 9% of voters, will the left succeed in building a real project around the winner of the popular primary? This outcome seems impossible to envisage, insofar as Yannick Jadot, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Anne Hidalgo have already indicated that they are not withdrawing in favor of another candidate.

If Christiane Taubira, Charlotte Marchandise, Pierre Larrouturou or Anna Tagueb-Porterie wins, the left will then have one more candidate for the presidential election next April.
