A price that is too high and not very dissuasive?
Consumers looking to get their hands on NVIDIA RTX 3000 graphics cards have been struggling for more than a year now. Blame it on the shortage of semiconductors, but also on the scalpers, who do not hesitate to buy many cards to resell them elsewhere at exorbitant prices. To combat this phenomenon, the American retailer BestBuy has put these RTX 3000 cards, in their Founder’s Edition format, behind a paywall called “Totaltech”.
For $199 per year, subscribers can get access to hard-to-obtain hardware, preferential pricing, and ongoing technical support and faster delivery. Problem, this strategy put in place by BestBuy seems to be a total failure for customers and observers. Indeed, placing the RTX 3000 cards behind this paywall would in no way have made it easier for buyers.
Models that recently went on sale quickly ran out of stock, and some customers were able to purchase multiple cards of different models. As a result, many consumers are pointing the finger at BestBuy’s strategy of taking advantage of TotalTech to make additional profits without offering members any real benefits.
