Ex-VIVA presenter Milka is with “Wetten, dass ..?” grew up. In an interview, she reveals which musical performance inspired her.

The long-time presenter at the music channel VIVA and music specialist Milka Loff Fernandes (41) has one Spotify playlist with 18 songs curated with the TV show “Wetten, dass ..?” connects. In an interview with spot on news, she also talks about her childhood and youth memories of the big Saturday evening format, which is celebrating a comeback on Saturday (November 6th) at 8:15 p.m. with the moderation duo Thomas Gottschalk (71) and Michelle Hunziker (44) .

When was the first time you said “Wetten, dass ..?” seen?

Milka: You know you grew up with something when you can’t remember how it started. “Bet that..?” was just always there. Always on Saturday. Always in the evening. Always with the whole family and always we all bet. Fevered. Danced along. And sang along.

Have you been a regular viewer?

Milka: Yep. Unless there was no TV nearby or I was abroad.

What do you associate with the show?

Milka: With this show, as a viewer, you were always in the middle of it in a very special way, instead of just being there. Whether Mannheim, Munich or Mallorca – the event always took place in your own living room. This is how “Wetten, dass ..?” the epitome of a cozy TV evening with the family.

What was your personal “Wetten, dass ..?” Highlight?

Milka: My highlights have always been the city bets. I don’t know why, but I still get goosebumps today at the thought that television brings so many different people in a city together. If you will, it was a program that not only shaped the audience, but somehow also helped to shape the public space through its design.

Which musical performances do you particularly remember and why?

Milka: I loved music on TV as a child. But I still remember how I used Kaoma (“Lambada”) in “Wetten, dass ..?” have seen. You have to know that I was the only dark-skinned child around me and suddenly saw myself for the first time in the dance, the music and the language on the biggest show in Germany. I found the staging of Mando Diao (“Dance with Somebody”) particularly great in terms of style. That was elegant and had nothing at all to do with what you would normally call “Wetten, dass ..?” was used to. I was really pleasantly surprised.

Personally, I like it that things could go wrong with the superstars who performed there. “Bet that..?” was just live and not perfect. But it was precisely in such situations that you could show your greatness. Like for example Britney Spears (“Baby One More Time”) with a medley and a feather boa that got caught in her micro and therefore wags her butt like a cat’s tail. In general, the music performances were always big fashion statements. Who doesn’t remember Cher’s (“Believe”) comeback at the age of 60 in a skin-tight glitter dress? Years later, Sarah Connor convinced with less glitter but about as much skin and voice and a lot of love.

As a former VIVA presenter, what do you think of the music acts?

Milka: “Bet that ..?” that is something you have never heard before, but you will still like it? When choosing the music, this show certainly broadened my musical horizons. Meat Loaf (“I Would Do Anything For Love”)! Skirt? I would never have come across that if I hadn’t been so touched by his goosebumps appearance on the show. My musical filter bubble didn’t stand a chance with so much feeling.

But the greatest thing this show had to offer were definitely the appearances in the arena on Mallorca, at the golden spearhead of which Jennifer Lopez (“On The Floor”) skillfully hit me in my rhythmic bowels. For me, this appearance symbolizes the big party, the great fun, the great feeling of solidarity that this show has brought into our living room for decades.
