LIMA (Reuters) – Peruvian President Pedro Castillo on Friday appointed culture minister Betsy Chavez as prime minister after accepting the resignation of Anibal Torres on Thursday.
The former prime minister, a staunch ally of the president, resigned after the opposition-controlled Congress declined to take a confidence vote on Thursday, saying the conditions for doing so had not been met.
The confidence vote was intended to pressure Congress as the executive branch opposes the legislature.
