Better than GTA VI and MrBeast, this video has 1.4 billion views in 24 hours: Discord’s blunder

A video posted to YouTube by Discord quickly exceeded one billion views.

1,400 million views in less than 24 hours, a figure that is the dream of any YouTube channel in the world. This is not a new trailer for GTA VI, the announcement of the next Avengers film or the latest Mr Beast video, but rather a video published by Discord.

Discord abused its April Fool’s joke

Without doing it on purpose, Discord has simply developed a “View Bot”, that is to say an automated way to artificially increase the number of views of a video.

This video entitled “Discord Loot Boxes are here” is a short 17-second video published on April 1, 2024. It is in fact the brand’s April Fool’s Day. For 24 hours, the platform integrated a fake lootbox opening functionality on the popular chat application.

To demonstrate this function, the small button that appeared on the application actually opened a YouTube video. As a result, all Discord applications around the world opened this famous video in a loop for 24 hours.

Screenshots from Discord developers show that even they were surprised by the artificial popularity of this video.

A demonstration for advertisers?

This weekend, another piece of news concerned Discord: the platform would be preparing the arrival of advertisements to increase its revenue. Coincidence or not, we can say that there is no better demonstration than this April Fool’s Day and the views recorded on this YouTube video.

Indeed, Discord could very well say something like: “in less than 24 hours, this video has been viewed more than 600 million times on our service, this could be your ad next time“. An argument that could hit its target.
