Netflix only focuses on action and doesn’t have any western series on offer? This Netflix original from “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter is intended to compete with hit series like “Yellowstone”!

Is the Western genre a thing of the past? “Sons of Anarchy” maker Kurt Sutter has a completely different opinion! The showrunner is planning “The Abandons”, a new western action drama on Netflix, which is set in the Wild West of the 1850s and will really heat up viewers with ten one-hour episodes.
“The Abandons” is about the devout Irish woman and matriarch Fiona Nolan, who cannot have children naturally and decides to adopt four children. But her rebellious behavior draws the ire of European aristocrats who want to claim her house in Oregon for themselves. The outsider family then defends itself and fights for justice and their survival.
The fact that the Western has found its way back onto streaming providers is actually not that surprising. After all, series creator Taylor Sheridan’s comprehensive universe, especially the hit series “Yellowstone” with Kevin Costner on the streaming service Paramount+, has achieved great success and made viewers want more.
But Sutter’s idea didn’t come by chance and was inspired not just since the start of “Yellowstone” but by the HBO series “Deadwood”. The showrunner commented on this in an interview with the US online portal Deadline as follows after the announcement of his new Netflix series:
“I’ve always wanted to do a Western, even before Sons, and then Deadwood came out. There’s this great story about Ian Anderson, who wanted to be a great rock guitarist, and he saw Clapton play and said, ‘Shit, I’m going to be the best rock flautist who ever lived.’ […] That’s how I felt when I saw Deadwood. I said, “Let me stick with the crime genre,” and then used almost every actor that was on that show. But I love the genre, and during the pandemic I tried to get a western IP.”

The series creator also revealed in an interview with Deadline that he can imagine a comprehensive story that will last several seasons. The action takes place before the American Civil War and, in its own way, refers to the Sicilian La Cosa Nostra, who were also exploited by land barons and then took power themselves.
The main roles are played by Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”) as Fiona Nolan and Gillian Anderson (“Sex Education”, “The Crown”) as Constance Van Ness. The cast also includes Natalia Del Riego (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), Aisling Franciosi (“The Fall”), Lamar Johnson (“The Last of Us”), Nick Robinson (“Jurassic World”), Diana Silvers (” Booksmart”) and Lucas Till (“X-Men: Apocalypse”).
Other supporting roles include Patton Oswalt (“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”), Michiel Huisman (“Rebel Moon”, “The Flight Attendant”), Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”, “The Walking Dead”) and Toby Hemingway ( “The Crossing”, “Sun Gazer”).
Filming of “The Abandons” is scheduled to begin in May 2024 and the western series is scheduled to start in 2025. If you can’t wait until then, you’ll find plenty of distraction on Netflix with these popular series on the streaming service. As soon as the drama series is released, it will definitely appear in the current Netflix top 10.
