Cashless payment has been on the rise in Germany since the corona pandemic. But currently you should better take cash with you when shopping, because nationwide there have been restrictions on paying by card since Tuesday. It doesn’t matter whether you want to pay with a debit or credit card. It also doesn’t matter which bank issued your card.

The cause is a software problem with the Verifone H5000 terminal, which the provider has now confirmed on its website. The company wants to remedy the situation soon with a software update, but it is still unclear when this will appear. Verifone’s full statement can be found below.

We are aware that there is a usability problem for processing card payments with a certain proportion of the Verifone H5000 terminals, which are mainly used in Germany, and that inconveniences may have been caused by this situation. We are working to fix the problem with the highest priority and are cooperating intensively with our customers and partners.

We will be providing a software update shortly to fix the issue and will let our customers know when it becomes available.
