Between ruins – man recovered from Roman excavation in Vienna

A man was recovered Tuesday morning from a Roman excavation on Michaelerplatz between the Roman ruins in downtown Vienna.

After an emergency call from a witness, the professional fire brigade and professional rescue service moved to the sight shortly after 5 a.m. A firefighter climbed down to the man who was lying around five meters deep in the ruins using a pulley system and a turntable ladder. It is currently unclear whether the man wanted to climb into the half-height wall of an enclosed excavation or fell for another reason. When emergency services arrived, the man was responsive. However, due to a language barrier, the emergency services could not find out how the accident happened. The approximately 50-year-old “had bruised his hip when he fell,” said a spokesman for the professional rescue service. He refused further medical care.
