Caution! Firewood scam

Energy prices are rising – especially in these times you are happy about a bargain. Many who already have a wood stove or are having one installed these days are preparing camps for the winter. An offer with firewood for 60 or 70 euros per bulk cubic meter, with free and nationwide delivery within 24 hours, is just right. Such bargain offers are currently circulating on the internet. For weeks now, police authorities have been warning of fake shops trying to trick consumers as energy prices rise.

So far, the police headquarters in Bad Segeberg, the police headquarters in Lower Bavaria and the district police authority in Wesel have specifically warned of the scam. The problem: The online pages appear reputable at first glance, even a good-looking imprint is stored. So if you come across delivery costs and conditions that are too good, you should be careful. Usually an advance payment has to be made or at least a down payment. Once money has flowed, the supposed deal already ends. The fake firewood is never delivered and the crooks make off with their loot.

Citizens’ allowance: False incentives for low earners

The traffic light coalition had agreed to regulate the basic security for the unemployed and to introduce the so-called citizen benefit. This social benefit includes, among other things, up to 50 euros more money per month, the complete assumption of heating costs and significantly fewer sanctions than before.

However, the craft association sees false incentives for low earners in this concept: “It demotivates those who work regularly with a low salary. At the lower end, the boundaries between regular work and basic income are becoming increasingly blurred,” said the President of the Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH), Hans Peter Wollseifer, the “Rheinische Post”.

Many will ask why they should work at seven in the morning when people who receive citizen income receive almost the same, Wollseifer continues. For more people than before, not working will then be more worthwhile than working.

Absolutely missed!

In the midst of the crisis and the problems of fossil fuels becoming visible, a study shows that no major industrialized country has achieved the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, according to the non-profit organization CDP. The plan was to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. According to the study, industrialized countries are heading towards global warming of 2.7 degrees with emissions from industry, transport and energy.

If the earth actually warmed up by 2.7 degrees compared to the pre-industrial age, then some parts of the earth would become uninhabitable, according to climate researchers: inside. Along with Italy, Germany is one of the countries that still scores best in the ranking. According to the study, Germany is on a 2.2 degree path.

New successor: Liz Truss replaces Boris Johnson

Liz Truss has prevailed against her competition, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, to become the new British prime minister. According to the Tagesschau, the previous foreign minister prevailed in an internal party vote. The approximately 175,000 party members could vote online or by post. Truss received 81,000 votes, 60,000 went to Sunak.

Truss belongs to the right wing of the party. At the beginning, the politician spoke out against Brexit, but she has since changed her attitude and often talks about the advantages of leaving the EU. During the election campaign, she was particularly convincing with her plan to immediately lower taxes despite the inflation. In addition, her confrontational line towards the EU and populist statements about refugees, leftists, environmental activists and social minorities may have been reasons that convinced her party base, according to the Tagesschau. Rising energy prices are seen as her biggest challenge in her forthcoming term of office.

Queen Elizabeth II will appoint the new Prime Minister Truss on Tuesday at her castle in Balmoral, Scotland. This makes her the third woman at the head of the British government after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. On the same day, the former party leader Boris Johnson is also officially dismissed from his position as prime minister by the Queen. After numerous scandals, including banned “lockdown” celebrations at his official residence, he left office under pressure from his cabinet and the parliamentary group.
