Beware of these sex toys that could release phthalates during use: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Phthalates are chemical substances present in many everyday consumer products such as food packaging, vinyl floor coverings, household cleaning products but also… in sex toys. This is the conclusion of researchers from Duke University (USA) in a study published in the journal Microplastics and Nanoplastics.

Endocrine disruptors present in some sex toys

To arrive at this not very reassuring observation, the scientists analyzed four types of sex toys available: a double vibrator, anal beads, an anal toy and an external vibrator. To confirm or refute the presence of endocrine disruptors, the researchers used an abrasion machine to break down these toys.

Result ? According to the study authors, the levels of microplastics and nanoplastics released when the toys break down via the abrasion tests were those of the anal toy, beads, double vibrator, and external vibrator.

“The results identify the anal toy as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the anal beads as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the external vibrator as a silicone blend (polydimethylsiloxane [PDMS]), and the double vibrator as a rubber mixture (polyisoprene)”, say the researchers.

Sex toys: the presence of phthalate also singled out

That’s not all: during their analyses, American scientists have also discovered the presence of phthalate among the sex toys studied.

Moreover, their levels exceeded the amount prohibited in other everyday objects. “These exploratory data point to potential concerns, highlight research questions, and the need to quickly prioritize protective actions. Therefore, future work and actions are needed to understand and reduce risks. related to this category of products”, explain the researchers.

As reminded Public Health France (SPF)these chemicals are known to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and are even considered endocrine disruptors. Most are classified as “reproductive toxins“.
