It is the researchers at Avast who today warn of the dangers of a new extension for Google Chrome.

The latter is indeed cut out to… steal your passwords and cryptocurrencies.

A new malicious extension for Google Chrome

Used by hundreds of millions of users around the world, the Google Chrome browser is the undisputed market leader. Developed by Google and launched almost 15 years ago, Chrome is distinguished by a store that allows you to install (among other things) extensions.

Unfortunately, if the extensions are often very practical, they can (as is the case on the Android Play Store) be hijacked by malicious users. Avast today warns users about a new extension integrating VenomSoftX.

Beware of Google Sheets 2.1

Indeed, VenomSoftX is deployed by ViperSoftX, which is a Trojan horse developed to steal the cryptocurrencies and passwords of its victims. A paid scam, since according to data collected by Avast, VenomSoftX would have allowed its creators to collect no less than 130,000 dollars, garnered in a completely illegal manner.

Typically, ViperSoftX is installed on victims’ PCs when they download what they think is pirated software. ” It is commonly known as Activator.exe or Patch.exe. But as soon as it is executed, the victim is infected with ViperSoftX explains Avast.

However, this same Trojan horse is also deployed through a (fake) extension called Google Sheets 2.1. The latter of course has no direct link with Google, but can thus easily deceive the vigilance of the user to install the malware. Platforms such as Binance, Coinbase or Kucoin are concerned.

Avast specifies that the software can modify the HTML code of a website, in order to divert information from the victim’s cryptocurrency wallet, before siphoning the funds. A Google Sheets 2.1 extension to avoid absolutely.
