Under the motto “Football can do more”, female greats in the sport demand a stronger representation. It should be 30 percent by 2024.

With the “Football can do more” initiative, nine prominent women, who are closely connected to the sport in different ways, speak out in favor of various changes in the German football landscape. Above all, a quota of women of at least 30 percent should be achieved by 2024. “With our target of at least 30 percent, we went relatively low,” the former “ran” presenter Gaby Papenburg (61) and co-founder of “Football can do more” is quoted by “Die Zeit”. “But even 30 percent are beyond the imagination of many,” continues Papenburg.

Referee Bibiana Steinhaus (42), ex-national player Katja Kraus (50) and presenter Claudia Neumann (57) are among the nine prominent women who have signed. In addition to the quoted quota, the salary structure should also become more transparent in the future. A further requirement provides for various sanction mechanisms in order to act more effectively against the persistent issue of sexism in football.

No help from the DFB?

The women behind the initiative do not feel sufficiently supported by the German Football Association (DFB). “Even if there is internal understanding for one or the other critical position, a public commitment is regarded as lacking solidarity,” says Papenburg of “Die Zeit”.

Kraus, who stood between the posts at FSV Frankfurt from 1986 to 1998 and became European champion with the national team in 1995, adds: “It’s amazing that we have to talk about something like that, after all we are not a terrorist cell, but women who are committed to gender equality And all the more need to be strengthened within the association who are committed to change. “
