US President Joe Biden is also planning a visit to the southern border of the United States with the neighboring country as part of his upcoming trip to Mexico. The details of such a stopover are currently in the works, said Biden on Wednesday in the American state of Kentucky.

It would be Biden’s first trip to the Mexican border as president. His government has been repeatedly criticized for the high number of migrants who sometimes illegally cross the Mexican-American border into the United States.

The situation there is particularly tense at the moment. In the past few weeks, an above-average number of migrants had come to the southern border of the USA because they expected a controversial deportation regulation to be abolished, which remains in force for the time being. The so-called Title 42 rule was introduced under former American President Donald Trump and, with reference to the corona pandemic, makes it easier for migrants to be rejected quickly. The border town of El Paso in the state of Texas recently declared a state of emergency because many of the migrants could no longer find space in the available accommodation in the sometimes freezing temperatures and camped in the streets of the city.

Migration will also be a key topic at the North America Summit, where Biden will meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Jan. 10 in Mexico City, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Claude said. Pierre, on Tuesday.
