WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden will announce new regulations on Monday to limit and ban the manufacture of so-called “ghost weapons,” as his administration faces mounting pressure to tackle gun deaths and violent crimes.
“Ghost” weapons are “homemade” firearms, which therefore do not have a serial number. Law enforcement has difficulty tracking them when they are used to commit a crime.
Joe Biden and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco will announce the Justice Department’s final executive order during an event at the White House on Monday. The announcement is likely to spark opposition and litigation from gun advocates in the coming weeks.
At the event, Joe Biden will also appoint former United States Attorney Steve Dettelbach from Ohio to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), a senior official said. responsible for the administration to journalists.
This announcement is part of a series of measures announced by the US President and the Department of Justice in April last year to combat growing gun violence in the United States and limit the mass shootings.
In 2021, about 20,000 “ghost” weapons were reportedly recovered by law enforcement as part of criminal investigations and reported to the ATF, ten times more than in 2016, according to statistics released by the White House .
With these new regulations, the Department of Justice intends to ban non-serialized “buy build shoot” kits that allow you to build a functional firearm in just 30 minutes.
