VfB defies Ibiza-Bayern and makes Hertha tremble

After the short holiday in Ibiza and before receiving the championship trophy, FC Bayern cannot win their last Bundesliga home game of the season against VfB Stuttgart. The Swabians thus secure the relegation place and even have the chance to displace Hertha BSC from 15th place on the last day of the game.

Before the second championship party, FC Bayern conceded another mood dampener and involuntarily caused further tension in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team couldn’t get past a 2-2 (2-1) win over VfB Stuttgart on Sunday and gave the Swabians an immensely important point in the bottom of the table.

“If you look at the second half, we can be rather dissatisfied. But overall we’re happy to take the point,” said Stuttgart’s sports director Sven Mislintat on DAZN: “Both can live with the 2-2, Bayern can celebrate and we Hertha still put under pressure.”

VfB has the relegation place as good as certain and can theoretically catch Hertha BSC three points behind in the season finale against 1. FC Köln. FC Augsburg can already celebrate as they can certainly plan for another season in the Bundesliga thanks to the draw in Stuttgart.

Serge Gnabry (35th) and Thomas Müller (44th) scored for Munich, who ceremonially received their tenth championship trophy in a row after the game. Tiago Tomas (8th) and Sasa Kalajdzic (52nd) secured a point for the Swabians in front of 75,000 spectators in the sold-out Allianz Arena. Robert Lewandowski missed the possible winning goal for Bayern with a shot on the crossbar (76th), Kingsley Coman (90th + 5) saw the red card shortly before the end.

Bayern coach Nagelsmann, who had described the trip to Ibiza by some stars as a result of the staid 3-1 defeat in Mainz as “sensible stress control”, had to do without the sick internationals Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala and sent seven short vacationers from the start to the party. “They weren’t drinking in a coma,” stressed Nagelsmann.

But the Munich team only got into the game badly, VfB acted boldly and took the lead early on: Omar Marmoush ran away from the weak Tanguy Nianzou down the right flank and found Tomas with his pass, who scored powerfully from 15 meters to make it 1-0. The hosts responded with furious attacks, Müller only hit the crossbar from close range (12′), Leon Goretzka miserably missed from the best position (14′).

The Munich team continued to try, but then struggled offensively. VfB countered dangerously, Marmoush took a shot from an acute angle (23′). Müller failed a little later with a header from the brilliantly reacting VfB keeper Florian Müller (28th). But the record champion stayed on and turned the game around before the break: first Mavropanos steered a shot from Gnabry into his own net, then Müller skilfully tipped the ball into the goal. Despite the lead behind them, Bayern came out of the break unsettled, Kalajdzic effortlessly jumped over Nianzou and headed in to equalize. Only a little later, the Austrian missed the Stuttgart lead (54th) in front of Manuel Neuer. The game remained open, both teams looked for the way forward.
