Arminia Bielefeld stunned Bundesliga team Union Berlin by winning 2-0 in the DFB Cup, thanks to goals from Marius Wörl and André Becker. Both goals resulted from mistakes by Union Berlin players, as highlighted by their coach Bo Svensson. Despite Union’s pressure in the second half, Bielefeld’s solid defense and swift counterattacks secured their advancement to the last 16. The draw for the next round will be held on December 3-4.
In a stunning upset, third-division club Arminia Bielefeld eliminated Bundesliga team Union Berlin from the DFB Cup.
Marius Wörl (12′) and André Becker (71′) scored in front of 26,117 fans at the Bielefeld Alm, leading to a 2-0 victory that propelled Arminia into the next round.
Capitalizing on Union’s Errors
Both goals came as a result of mistakes from the Berlin side. Union’s head coach, Bo Svensson, acknowledged this, stating, ‘We made a bad pass, and Bielefeld took full advantage.’ He noted that these were individual errors, emphasizing, ‘That’s just part of soccer.’ Meanwhile, Bielefeld’s coach, Michél Kniat, expressed his pride in the team’s performance, declaring, ‘That was a strong display from us, and the game was at Bundesliga level.’
The opening goal capitalized on a mishap in Union’s build-up play, as András Schäfer delivered a wayward pass directly to Wörl. Without hesitation, he launched a shot from 35 meters that sailed over the goalkeeper, Frederik Rönnow, to find the back of the net.
Following that goal, Union struggled to regain their composure. Just three minutes later, Bielefeld nearly doubled their lead when a slip from Kevin Vogt allowed Louis Oppie to break through on goal — however, Rönnow showcased his reflexes with a remarkable save.
Union Hits the Woodwork Twice
The Berlin side nearly equalized in the 28th minute when Rani Khedira expertly controlled the ball and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot that struck the crossbar. Moments before halftime, Bielefeld’s luck held as Schäfer’s free-kick hit the post, and Danilho Doekhi’s follow-up was thwarted by goalkeeper Jonas Kersken.
Overall, it was a disciplined first-half display from Bielefeld, while Union’s performance left much to be desired, according to Svensson.
Union Pressures, Arminia Strikes Again
The dynamic shifted in the second half as the Bundesliga team came out aggressively, applying continuous pressure on the Arminia goal.
Union nearly found the back of the net again just after the hour mark, but a deflected shot from Laszlo Bénes narrowly missed its target. However, it was Arminia who scored next during a moment of misfortune for Berlin. Diogo Leite lost the ball to Wörl, leading to a swift one-two with Maël Corboz, before Wörl set up Becker, who confidently increased the lead to 2-0 — a decisive moment in the match.
The DFB Cup round of 16 is scheduled for December 3-4, with the draw taking place on Sunday at 7:25 PM.
