Big bird count started: Download the app now and count

From Thursday the birds will be counted again in gardens and parks across Germany. As the organizer of the annual scientific hands-on campaign, the Naturschutzbund (Nabu) hopes for active participation in the “Hour of Winter Birds” from Friday to Sunday and for new insights into how the domestic bird world is doing. “The more reports we receive, the more precisely we can get a picture of the situation,” said Nabu country manager Rica Münchberger.

The data can then be reported by phone, on the Internet or with the official Nabu app. “This means that everyone can help to enable a detailed snapshot of the bird world in our cities and villages,” explained Nabu Federal Managing Director Leif Miller.

According to her, the easiest way to observe the winter birds is at bird feeders, dumpling dispensers in the garden and on the balcony. Those who want to take part should observe the birds for an hour and note the highest number of birds of each species that can be seen at the same time in the course of an hour.

The observations could be reported online by January 17th. The free number 0800-1157-115 is available for telephone reports on January 8th and 9th.
