As expected, one of the biggest Netflix movies of May 2024, and even of the year, is available to all subscribers. A must-watch madness or a trainwreck to avoid at all costs?

As a reminder, the firm with the red N has spent lavishly to afford three new animated series, including Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Garôden: The Way of the Lone Wolf season 1 and My Oni. In documentaries, there was the program Buying London which features luxury real estate agents in the streets of London. Finally, on the film side, it was Steven Spielberg who thrilled subscribers with The Fabelmans. But the best, or perhaps the worst, is yet to come with this exclusive Netflix feature film.

It’s after 9:01 a.m., which means that THE new Netflix release of the day is available and you can already get under a blanket to watch it. Unlike The Fabelmans, which is one of three feature films added May 20-26, 2024, this one was created for the service. And it is worn by a singing star: Jennifer Lopez. This is the science fiction film Atlas with J-LO. “Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez) is a brilliant yet surly data analyst who is extremely suspicious of artificial intelligence. What is this sci-fi Netflix film worth? Well not much at first glance. The first reviews of Atlas are murderous with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 15% from 13 press reviews. Apparently this production took its theme a little too much to heart. “The Netflix movie Atlas with Jennifer Lopez is like an artificial science fiction film, which walks and talks like the real thing, but isn’t” according to Screen Rant. “Atlas has some funny elements and moments, but overall it’s pretty bad. When we think that the film is going to take off, it suddenly deviates towards another void which testifies to the fragility of the scenario” said Collider.

One of the big new features of May 2024 Netflix therefore seems to be a big flop, which The Wrap confirms. And the site isn’t holding back. “There’s a good idea in Brad Peyton’s Atlas hidden somewhere beneath the generic dialogue, awkward plot, mediocre action and performances that don’t work”. It’s a severe tackle. In this raw world, and in this ambient chaos, IGN Films manages to find something positive in this film. And this is one of the only two reviews that doesn’t shoot it down. “Atlas may not be the next groundbreaking sci-fi epic, but Brad Peyton’s film that pits humanity against AI wins points for its ability to entertain us with its sensitive concept that seems much worse that its execution ».
