  • Big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner wants to have improved his own record by more than two meters.
  • A drone measurement of his daring ride on a wave off Nazaré, Portugal on February 24th showed a value of 28.57 meters.
  • The world record is still pending confirmation.

The value would be a significant improvement on his previous record of 26.21 meters. “It was a wonderful day. Maybe from outside it looks like chaos. But I proved to myself what is possible,” said Steudtner, according to Bayerischer Rundfunk. There is still no official confirmation of the world record from the World Surf League (WSL).

The Nuremberg native Steudtner has been one of the most successful athletes in his discipline for years. To ride on gigantic waves, he can be pulled into the water using a jet ski and then reaches speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.

There are always waves of this size off the Portuguese coastal town of Nazaré. An underwater sea canyon that ends just offshore creates these monster waves in winter.
