With the BigBlueButton 2.4 update, the video conference system brings innovations for online teaching. In the official announcement, the free project emphasizes three points: Breakout rooms can now be given individual names if required, and the mini-conference period can be subsequently extended. Surveys can now be conducted anonymously.
There is also a new dashboard. On this learning analytics dashboard, educators can see an overview of student engagement, attendance and learning progress, based on student activity on surveys. It updates the software every ten seconds.
For schools and universities
BigBlueButton (BBB) describes itself as a global learning platform and has been increasingly used in schools and universities since the beginning of the corona pandemic. In Germany, for example, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education reports around 154,000 users in 13,000 conferences a day as of February 2021. The federal state made 1.3 million euros available for this.
When applications like BBB are used in everyday learning at German schools, they are subject to strict conditions. Concerns of the state commissioner for data protection Stefan Brink caused a move away from Microsoft 365 for school purposes in Baden-Württemberg. More information about the new features of version 2.4 of BigBlueButton can be found on the official website.
