The meeting was made with the fans: OnePlus presented today, Tuesday December 5, 2023, a new smartphone. This presentation took place only in China, before an international formalization which would be scheduled for January 23, 2024, one month before the opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Thus, like many competitors, OnePlus is bringing forward the announcement of its high-end model.

This new smartphone is, unsurprisingly, the OnePlus 12, the new standard-bearer of the alternative brand from Oppo which has been so talked about in leaks and rumors. It replaces the OnePlus 11 by providing a modernized technical sheet on many points. The screen is bigger. The processor is more powerful. Photo sensors are more relevant. The battery is more generous. All in a case that keeps the same trappings as those of the OnePlus 11: mineral glass on the faces, aluminum on the edges and a beautiful off-center photo module for the most beautiful effect. This design is IP65 certified against water and dust.

The OnePlus 12 benefits from a larger screen and a more powerful processor

Let’s go into detail about the changes to the technical sheet. The screen is slightly larger, going from 6.7 to 6.82 inches. Since 2021, OnePlus has not changed the size of its flagship. So it’s an event. Apart from the OnePlus Open, this is the largest screen integrated into a smartphone from the brand. Here are the main characteristics of this panel:

  • Technology AMOLED LTPO
  • Variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz
  • Maximum brightness at 1600 nits globally
  • Definition Quad HD+ (1440 x 3168 pixels)
  • Resolution of 510 pixels per inch
  • Dolby Vision and HDR10+ compatible
  • Always-On compatible

Under this screen, you will find a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the high-end SoC presented by Qualcomm in October. Clocked at up to 3.3 GHz and cooled by heatsinks and a vapor chamber, it is capable of managing generative AI without external help. He is accompanied by 12 to 24 GB of RAM (LPDDR5X format) and 256 GB to 1 TB of internal storage (not expandable). To bring it all to life, OnePlus has chosen a battery of 54000mAh, in place of the 5000 mAh battery used over the last two years. It is compatible 100 watt fast charging And 50 watt wireless fast charging. OnePlus promises a full charge in less than half an hour.

The OnePlus 12 is inspired by the OnePlus Open for photography

On the photo side, a few small changes to note, largely inspired by the OnePlus Open. First, the main lens is brighter. The telephoto lens becomes periscopic and offers a 3x zoom ratio. The associated sensor, larger, sees its definition doubled, to reach 64 megapixels. Finally, the selfie sensor also benefits from a doubled definition to reach 32 megapixels. The ultra wide angle does not change. Here are all the details at a glance:

  • Panorama: 48 MP sensor, phase detection autofocus, f/2.2 opening lens, 114° viewing angle
  • Telephoto lens: 64 MP sensor, phase detection autofocus, periscopic lens opening at f/2.6, optical stabilizer, 3x optical zoom
  • Selfie: 32 MP sensor, lens opening at f/2.4, fixed focal length

The price of the OnePlus 12 is higher than that of the OnePlus 11

We also find all the usual amenities of a OnePlus flagship, such as the dual speaker and the fingerprint reader under the screen. Network connections have been updated: WiFi 7 Dual Band and Bluetooth 5.4. The operating system couldn’t be more current: Android 14 serving as the basis for ColorOS 14 (in France, we will logically keep OxygenOS). With so much improvement, the OnePlus 12 is unsurprisingly a little heavier (220 grams) and a little larger than its predecessor, even if the height changes very little despite the new screen.

Now let’s talk about the price. He is in slight increase compared to the price of the OnePlus 11 at its launch, with the same configuration: the OnePlus 12 with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage will be launched at 4,299 yuan (still 560 euros), compared to 3,999 yuan for its predecessor. This represents an increase of 7.5%. The most generous version, with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, will be priced at 5,799 yuan (around 750 euros). It remains to be seen what configurations will be sold on the OnePlus European site and what prices will be charged.
