Bill failed – US Senate rejects aid package for Ukraine and Israel – News

  • A new bill for new aid to Ukraine and Israel as well as money for the US migration system has failed in the US Senate.
  • The senators rejected the package, the contents of which had been fought over for months.
  • Former US President Donald Trump had previously voiced opposition to the agreement.

It had already become apparent that the legislative package negotiated across party lines would not receive a majority. The release of new US aid to Ukraine is being blocked by a domestic political dispute between Democrats and Republicans in the US Parliament. Republicans had insisted that funding for Ukraine be tied to funding for the US border. Among other things, they have expressed doubts about support for Ukraine or completely reject it.

They also demand significantly more resources to secure the US border and stricter immigration laws. Illegal immigration to the US is one of the dominant issues in the presidential election campaign. Trump wants to prevent Biden from achieving success by passing a bipartisan agreement on the issue. Everything currently points to a new edition of the duel between Biden and Trump in the presidential election.

Ukraine and Israel aid questionable

However, the Republicans want to approve aid for Israel and Ukraine in another vote. Initially, it was assumed that the Senate would vote on Wednesday on a $96 billion package in which migration policy reforms would be canceled but foreign aid would remain in place. But that didn’t happen again before the senators finished their work.

However, the release of funds to Israel and Ukraine remains questionable, even if the Senate gives the green light. Because the aid must also pass the House of Representatives, in which the Republicans have the majority. So far they have refused the help.

On Sunday, US senators presented a proposal for an aid package worth $118 billion. This includes military aid worth billions for Ukraine and Israel as well as funds for border protection. On Monday, the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives said: “Any review of this bill in its current form is a waste of time. He is dead on arrival at the House of Representatives. We encourage the US Senate to reject him.”
