Bill Gates wants to donate $20 billion to his foundation. He does not see the donation as a “sacrifice,” explains the entrepreneur.

Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates (66) has repeatedly emphasized that he wants to give his fortune back to the general public. In a new blog post he writes that he wants to donate 20 billion US dollars of his own wealth to his foundation, the “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation”, in July.

“As I look to the future, my goal is to give all of my wealth, apart from what I spend on myself and my family, to the foundation,” the post reads. He will therefore slide down the list of the richest people in the world and eventually disappear from it altogether. Gates does not see the donation as a “sacrifice”.

“The major crises of our time require that we all do more,” explains the 66-year-old, among other things, in relation to the corona pandemic, the war in Ukraine and climate change. He hopes other wealthy people will do the same.

“I think I have an obligation”

“I believe I have an obligation to give my resources back to society,” Gates said, in ways that are meant to have a meaningful, positive impact on people’s lives. The “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation” of the entrepreneur and his ex-wife has existed since 2000. On the list of billionaires of the business magazine “Forbes” Gates is currently listed in fifth place. He is said to have assets equivalent to around 102 billion euros. In front of him are Elon Musk (first place, around 228 billion euros) and Jeff Bezos (third place, around 139 billion euros).
