bill increases between 23% and 94% depending on the supplier

According to a comparative study carried out by our colleagues from Le Figaro, the increases in gas and electricity prices practiced in France over one year vary from 23% to 94% depending on the supplier.

Since 2007 and the opening up of the gas and electricity markets to competition, offers have multiplied with the arrival in the sector of numerous suppliers, such as Mega nergie, Wekiwi, TotalEnergies, ENI and even Vattenfall. According to Le Figaro, 25% of French people were won over by these newcomers and their competitive prices. However, in the current context, marked by galloping inflation and the war in Ukraine, soaring energy costs has led to price increases over a year that are sometimes brutal and, above all, surprisingly variable from one supplier to another.

Between 23% and 94% price increase over one year

according to Le Figarowhich to carry out its study was based on data from Watissime, its online tariff comparison and energy brokerage site, the practical increases in France between May 2021 and April 2022 vary between 23% and 94% depending on the suppliers.

Thus, our colleagues present a standard invoice for gas and electricity offers with the EDF-Engie duo, at regulated tariffs, and six of the main alternative suppliers. Mega energy is the one that has increased its prices the most over this period, up to 94% for a family of five living in a 120 square meter dwelling. According to our colleagues, this is due to the fact that its price is indexed to that of the wholesale market. Contact by Le Figarothe director of Mega nergie relies on a price drop of 40 45% by 2023.

30% increase on average for EDF-Engie

For its part, the EDF-Engie duo shows a limited increase of 23% for a single person living in a 20 square meter dwelling and 30% on average over one year, thanks in particular to the measures of the government which last autumn decided to freeze regulated gas prices and to limit the rise in electricity prices to 4%.

At Watissime, consumers are now advised to look for offers from major groups such as Vatenfall or Total. Regarding gas, it is recommended if possible to remain for the moment at the Engie gas regulation tariff, which as a reminder will be abolished in July 2023.
