The sports world is mourning the loss of Bill Walton. The former professional basketball player died at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer.

Mourning for Bill Walton (1952-2024): The former basketball star and two-time NBA champion is dead. Walton died on May 27 at the age of 71 and surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer, as the US professional league announced.

Bill Walton was unique and always in a good mood

“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind,” said Adam Silver, 62, commissioner of the NBA, in a statement. Walton, who is considered one of the best players in the league’s history at the center position, redefined this role. Walton won two championships, one with the Portland Trail Blazers and one with the Boston Celtics, was named season and finals MVP, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993. After his active career, he also worked as an analyst and commentator for several US television networks.

What Silver will remember most, however, is Walton’s zest for life. He continued: “He was a regular at league events – always in a good mood, with a smile from ear to ear and ready to share his wisdom and warmth.” Silver greatly valued the close friendship between the two and envied Walton for his “boundless energy.” Everyone who knew and loved the deceased will miss him deeply.

Walton was a valued member of the NBA family for 50 years and leaves behind his wife Lori and his four sons: Adam, Nate, Luke and Chris.
