Data from England now show that Moderna protects against Omikron the longest.
The highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus determines the infection rate in Europe. In Switzerland, too, the majority of new infections can now be traced back to the Omikron variant. As a result, the number of cases has risen to a record level. Since the virus variant can partially bypass the protective effect of the vaccines, according to the BAG as many people as possible in Switzerland should receive a booster vaccination. According to the federal corona task force, the third vaccination renews the protection against infection with Omikron to around 60 to 85 percent, at least in the short term.
But which mRNA booster vaccination protects most against omicron infection? The answer to this question is illustrated by new data from England. In the “vaccination report for week 51” by the British Ministry of Health, a total of 147,597 Delta cases and 68,489 Omicron cases were analyzed. The vaccination rates of people with a positive PCR test were compared with those with a negative one, thus determining the protective effect of the vaccines.
Protective effect at Biontech / Pfizer
Anyone who has been vaccinated twice with the vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer has around 60 percent protection against symptomatic disease from Omikron just two to four weeks after the second vaccination. This protection decreases continuously and is zero after 20 to 24 weeks. Against the delta variant, the protection drops from 90 percent to just over 60 percent over the same period.
Anyone who can be boosted with the same vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer increases the protective effect against omicron disease to almost 70 percent after one week. After ten weeks, the protection drops to around 50 percent. For comparison: the protective effect against Delta disease remains between 90 and 100 percent.
Protective effect at Moderna
Anyone who has been vaccinated twice with the Moderna vaccine has around 50 percent protection against symptomatic disease from Omikron two to four weeks after the second vaccination. This protection is practically zero after 19 weeks. Against the Delta variant, however, the protective effect remains at almost 80 percent.
According to the British data, anyone who can be boosted with the same Moderna vaccine achieves the highest level of protection against Omicron disease. After a booster vaccination with the Moderna vaccine, protection is 80 percent after just one week. Even five to nine weeks after the booster vaccination, protection remains at a level of over 70 percent.
Long-term studies are not yet possible because the test subjects in the study have not yet received the booster vaccination.
