Bird is better – Buzzard shot: investigations are ongoing

The female buzzard that was shot and found at Weißensee in Carinthia is recovering. The Greifenburg police are investigating in all directions and are asking for information. Birds of prey are protected all year round.

The injured bird of prey was already discovered on Wednesday in the fresh snow on the path along the Weißensee lake. Hotelier Stefan Lilg was then able to secure the poor bird. “He bedded him softly in a malte trough and housed him in a dark garage,” says Michaela Dworak from Vogelhilfe Kärnten, who then took the buzzard female to a veterinarian, where the projectile was found on the X-ray. “The cartridge came from an airgun. The poor animal convulsed and turned its head extremely backwards,” says Dworak. After the first aid, the animal expert brought the bird to the Eagle Arena Burg Landskron, where falconer Franz Schüttelkopf then took further measures. “We then took another X-ray at our vet’s, but the projectile was no longer visible, it must have fallen out during transport,” explained Schüttelkopf. The female buzzard was treated for lead poisoning and was then taken to the Adlerarena nursing station. The good news came on Saturday morning. The animal is slowly recovering. “She could even stand, which is a good sign,” said not only Franz Schüttelkopf. Michaela Dworak from Vogelhilfe Kärnten was also able to breathe a sigh of relief. The animal expert, who recently took over the care of birds and mammals from the state of Carinthia, is on duty around the clock for injured animals throughout Carinthia. However, there is no support for the missions for birds of prey, but the big animal lover goes out for the smallest mouse. Animal lovers can support the station with donations (IBAN AT80 6000 0208 1605 1950).
